Pat Mitchell scored a career-high 26 points, and
David Fanning hit on five free throws during the final 33 seconds as JMU rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit and held on for a 69-66 victory over Long Island.
The Dukes, who won on the road the first time in 2000-01, trailed by 12 points during the first half, 31-29 at halftime and 45-36 with 14 minutes to play before rallying behind Mitchell.
The sophomore forward hit on 11 of 15 shots overall and had 19 second-half points. His field goal with 5:57 to play put JMU in front for the first time, 55-54, and he had three rebounds and three steals. His field goal with 5:57 left came during a period during which he scored 10 straight JMU points.
The Dukes' lead was 64-58 with 42 seconds left after a tip-in field goal by
Dwayne Braxton and 65-60 after Fanning hit on the first of a one-and one free throw chance with 33 seconds to play. Fanning added two free throws with 30.7 seconds remaining after Long Island got to within 65-62 and two more with 4.5 seconds left after the Blackbirds pulled to within 67-66.
Fanning, who had 10 points, was the only Duke to join Mitchell in double figures in scoring.
JMU shot 53.6 percent (15-28) during the second half after shooting only 37.5 percent (12-32) during the first half and had only five second-half turnovers after having 11 during the first half. Long Island shot only 40.0 percent (10-25) during the second half after shooting 45.0 percent (9-20) during the opening period.
Long Island scored the game's first nine points and held JMU scoreless until the 14:47 mark of the first half. The Blackbirds led 22-10 with 9:34 left in the half and 25-15 at the 7:07 mark. Long Island had 19 turnovers, including 13 in the first half.
JMU had a 34-30 rebounding edge.
