HARRISONBURG, Va. (12/9/2000) – Jesse Young led four George Mason players in double figures in scoring as the Patriots beat JMU 65-54 and snapped the Dukes' 22-game home winning streak.
Young hit on six of nine shots and had a game-high nine rebounds and two blocked shots. After JMU cut a 13-point second-half deficit to 45-40 with 7:12 to play, Young blocked a Dukes' field goal attempt and scored his team's next six points for a 51-42 Patriot edge with 4:06 remaining.
JMU held two-time CAA player of the year George Evans, a 19.8-points-per-game scorer, to 12 points, but he added eight rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and a steal. George Mason also got 10 points and five assists from point guard Tremaine Price and 10 points off the bench from Rob Anderson.
JMU lost at home for the first time since January 1999. The Dukes also had a 14-game home conference winning streak ended.
George Mason shot only 42.9 percent (24-56), but the Patriots had a 32-26 rebounding edge and took advantage of 18 JMU turnovers. The Dukes had 11 turnovers during the first half when they trailed by 10 points twice before getting to within 30-23 at halftime.
Young, who had but two first-half points, had six points during the first 6:22 of the final half as George Mason upped its lead to 40-28, and the Patriot lead was 45-32 with 12:00 left.
JMU, which shot 47.1 percent (24-51), got 15 points from
David Fanning and 13 from
Pat Mitchell. Fanning had nine points during the final 2:19, and he hit on seven of nine shots. The Dukes hit on only two of 12 three-point field goal attempts and on but four of seven free throws.
