HARRISONBURG, Va. (1/20/2001) – Barron Thelmon's three-point field goal with 0:51 left, North Carolina Wilmington's fifth three-pointer during the last 7:08, put the Seahawks in front to stay, and they went on to a 61-60 win over JMU.
Thelmon's three-pointer gave UNCW a 59-56 edge, and the Seahawks raised the lead to 61-57 on Thelmon's two free throws with 35 seconds left after JMU's
Tim Lyle hit on one of two foul shots with 37 seconds to play. JMU got to within 61-60 on
David Fanning's three-pointer with 2.4 seconds left after UNCW's Brett Blizzard missed the first of a one-and-one free throw chance with 9.9 seconds left, and the Dukes got a final chance when the Seahawks' Ed Williams missed on the first shot of a one-and-one after being fouled before UNCW could in-bound the ball.
JMU's
Pat Mitchell rebounded Williams' free throw and passed to
Dwayne Braxton, whose shot from behind the mid-court line bounced off the front of the rim.
All but one UNCW field goal during the last 10 minutes were three-pointers. The most-crucial came from Craig Callahan, who pulled the Seahawks into a 56-56 tie with 1:36 left with his only points of the game, and from Thelmon, who scored after a Seahawk offensive rebound. UNCW had only two three-pointers during the first 32 minutes.
UNCW shot only 44.2 percent (23-52) to JMU's 51.3 percent (20-39) but got 13 more shots than JMU, grabbed 10 offensive rebounds and took advantage of 18 JMU turnovers. UNCW turned the ball over but nine times.
Williams led the Seahawks with 22 points (9-of-13 shooting) and 11 rebounds. Thelmon added 12 points and Stewart Hare 11. Hare had two first-half three-pointers to pull UNCW into a 21-21 tie after JMU led 16-5 and 18-7, and he hit on four of seven shots overall, including three of six three-point tries.
