WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (1/24/2001) – Mit Winter scored a career-high 36 points and William & Mary went on to a 71-58 victory over JMU after taking a 21-point halftime lead.
Winter had three three-point field goals while scoring 17 first-half points, and he had four field goals and hit on 11 straight free throws during the second half. The 6-foot-7 guard hit on eight of 10 shots from the field overall and on a team-game-record 17 straight free throws.
William & Mary led 32-11 at halftime as JMU hit on only two of 22 shots from the field in the first 20 minutes. The Dukes went without a field goal from the 17:24 mark until the 3:25 mark of the opening period. William & Mary shot only 40.9 percent (9-22) during in the first half but had five three-point field goals and hit on nine of 11 free throws.
JMU got to within 43-34 with 12:14 to play but then didn't score for more than five minutes. The Tribe hit on 25 of 32 free throws during the second half to help seal the win.
JMU finished with a 36.7 percent (22-60) shooting mark. The Dukes also had 16 turnovers, including 11 during the first half, and William & Mary had a 39-30 rebounding edge. JMU shot 52.6 percent (20-38) during the second half and forced 21 William & Mary turnovers overall.
Tim Lyle led JMU in scoring for the fourth straight game with a season-high 22 points and had a team-high nine rebounds. He had three three-pointers while scoring 16 second-half points.
Dwayne Broyles added a career-high 10 points and was the Dukes' only other double-figure scorer. Broyles had eight points and Lyle and
David Fanning five each while JMU was outscoring the Tribe 23-11 and pulling to within nine points to start the second half.
William & Mary shot 44.4 percent (16-36) from the field and hit on 34 of 43 free throws (79.1 percent). JMU committed 31 fouls, including 21 during the second half when it forced the Tribe to maintain its lead at the foul line, and had three players foul out. William & Mary had only three field goals during the final 13 minutes but hit on 22 free throws during that time.
Jim Moran and Mike Johnson added 13 and 10 points, respectively, and Johnson had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Tribe.
