HARRISONBURG, Va. (1/27/2001) – Ten JMU players scored, including
Jerian Younger who had a game-high 16 points, as the Dukes snapped a three-game losing streak with a 90-63 victory over Morgan State. The victory was JMU's second in 11 games dating back to a 69-66 win at Long Island Dec. 16.
Making only his second college start, Younger hit on five of nine shots from the field and on six of seven free throws. The 6-foot-9 sophomore forward also had four rebounds and a blocked shot in 23 minutes.
JMU took an 11-2 lead less than five minutes into the game and wasn't seriously threatened the rest of the way. Morgan State got to within 18-12, but a 13-2 scoring run gave JMU a 31-14 lead with seven minutes left during the first half.
Dwayne Braxton had two three-pointers and
Charlie Hatter one during the 13-2 burst, and the Dukes went on to lead 46-22 at halftime and 61-31 with 13 minutes to play. The Dukes' largest lead was 86-50 with 3:09 remaining.
Dwayne Broyles had 13 points off the bench, and
David Fanning in his first start in six games added 12 points and six assists for the Dukes. Braxton had nine points and
Chris Williams and
Tim Lyle eight each.
JMU shot 49.2 percent (30-61), had eight three-point field goals (23 attempts) and hit on 22 of 26 free throws (84.6 percent). Morgan State shot only 35.8 percent (19-53), and the Bears turned the ball over 24 times to JMU's 18.
Michael Canady led Morgan State with 15 points and seven rebounds. Reggie Winkfield and Chris King had 12 points each and Cedric Barrow 11 for the Bears.
JMU's 46 first-half points were a team season high, and Morgan State's 22 first-half points were a JMU-opponent season low.
JMU reached the 90-point scoring plateau in a game for the first time since winning 93-79 at Towson Feb. 21 of the previous seasonlast season.
