Pat Mitchell had six points during a 9-0 scoring burst that gave JMU an 11-point second-half lead, and the Dukes went on to beat Gardner-Webb 85-67 in their first home game of the season.
Gardner-Webb rallied from a 62-50 deficit to within 62-60 with nine minutes left before the Mitchell-led burst gave JMU control. Mitchell had three short-ranged field goals and

Dwayne Broyles' field goal with 4:23 left capped the run and gave JMU a 71-60 lead. JMU sealed its first victory of 2001-02 games by hitting on 12 of 16 free throws during the final 4:01.
Mitchell finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth JMU double-double. He hit on eight of 14 shots and had three steals.
David Fanning led JMU in scoring with a career-high 22 points, and Broyles had a career-high 17 points while starting in place of the injured
Ron Anderson (hand fracture). Fanning had 19 first-half points and finished with three three-point field goals, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Broyles also had five rebounds and an assist in a career-high 33 minutes.
Tim Lyle was JMU's fourth double-figure scorer with 14 points and five rebounds.
JMU led 41-31 with 2:50 left in the first half, but Gardner-Webb pulled to within 45-42 at halftime. Broyles scored JMU's first six points of the second half, and Lyle and Mitchell had four points each as the Dukes increased their margin to 12 points just more than seven minutes into the final period.
JMU shot 49.2 percent (29-59), including 60.7 percent (17-28) during the first half. Gardner-Webb hit on nine of 23 three-point attempts and shot 36.9 percent (24-65) overall. Each team had 39 rebounds and 14 turnovers.
James Colwell had 16 points, Bruce Fields 13 points and center Jamie Roller 12 points and 10 rebounds for Gardner-Webb.
