HARRISONBURG, Va. (12/22/2001) –
David Fanning led four JMU players in double figures in scoring with 25 points, and the Dukes pulled away from Morgan State during the final five minutes for a 84-66 non-conference win.
Fanning had 21 second-half points, including six straight for the Dukes, who raised a 72-64 lead with 4:01 to play to 78-64 with 2:44 left. Fanning had a three-pointer with 3:24 left for 75-64 JMU lead, a free throw at the 2:44 mark and two free throws with 2:23 remaining.
Morgan State, which trailed 52-38 less than seven minutes into the second half, got to within 68-62 on Curtis King's follow shot with 5:01 left.
Jerian Younger's three-pointer gave JMU a 71-62 lead with 4:35 to play, and
Ian Caskill's free throw with 4:13 left raised the lead to 72-62. Morgan State got to within 72-64 on Brandon Reece's follow shot with 4:01 remaining before Fanning's six straight points all but sealed the JMU win.
Tim Lyle came off the bench for a season-high 15 points and seven rebounds;
Pat Mitchell had 12 points and eight rebounds; and Younger had 10 points for JMU. Dwyane Broyles, who took over the ball-handling chores in the absence of starting point guard
Chris Williams (out with a foot injury), had a career-high seven assists.
Lyle hit on four of six three-point attempts, and Caskill added nine points and nine rebounds for JMU.
The Dukes, who shot 49.1 percent overall (26-53) and 47.4 percent (9-19) from three-point range, never trailed and pulled away from a 23-23 tie with 8:06 to play during the first half for a 37-31 halftime lead. JMU had a 37-27 rebounding edge.
Reece had 16 points and King 15 for Morgan State.
Fanning led JMU in scoring for the eighth straight game.
