HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/14/2001) –
Chris Williams scored a career-high 16 points, including six during the final 2:50, to lead JMU to a 57-49 win over Old Dominion.
Williams, who also had five rebounds and five assists, raised a 48-47 JMU lead to 52-47 with field goals with 2:50 and 2:01 to play. After Old Dominion got to within 52-49 on Michael Williams' layup with 0:53 left,
Chris Williams hit on two free throws with 49 seconds left to increase the lead to 54-49. JMU then got a free throw from
Ian Caskill at the 0:36 mark and two from
Tim Lyle at the 0:27 mark to seal the win.
Chris Williams, whose previous career scoring high was 11 and who entered the game averaging 4.1 points per game, hit on seven of 15 shots. He also had two steals and blocked a shot in 33 minutes. He had nine points during the second half when JMU shot only 30.0 percent (9-30) after hitting on 48.1 percent (13-27) of its first-half shots.
JMU led 34-18 late during the first half, but Old Dominion got the final five points before intermission and went in front for the first time since the opening minute, 41-40, on Andre McCullum's three-pointer with 11:13 left. The lead changed hands four times during the next 4:17 before Lyle's layup with 6:42 left put JMU in front to stay 46-45. JMU's
David Fanning scored with 4:41 remaining and McCullum with 3:58 left before
Chris Williams' key back-to-back field goals.
JMU led 17-6 at the 12:28 mark of the first half, and its 34-18 margin 2:13 before halftime was the game's largest.
Ron Anderson, who hit on each of his five shots during the first half, was the only JMU player to join
Chris Williams in double figures in scoring. He had 13 points, and Caskill added seven points, a game-high 12 rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots for the Dukes.
McCullum led Old Dominion with 18 points on seven-of-11 shooting. Pierre Greene added 10 points for the Monarchs.
JMU had a 41-35 rebounding margin and shot 38.6 percent (22-57). Old Dominion shot 33.9 percent (20-59).
