PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (1/16/2002) – Five Drexel players had points during the final 4:45 as the host Dragons pulled away from a one-point lead to beat JMU 69-59.
JMU rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit to lead briefly during the second half and trailed only 56-55 before being outscored 13-4 the rest of the way.
David Fanning's field goal got JMU to within 56-55 with 5:11 left, but Danny Hinds' three-pointer at the 4:45 mark gave Drexel a 59-55 lead.
Ian Caskill's tip-in field goal pulled JMU to within 59-57 with 4:29 to play, but the Dukes got only one more field goal and Drexel hit on seven of eight free throws during the final 3:14. JMU's final points came on Caskill's short hook shot with 1:27 left and got the Dukes to within 64-59.
JMU shot only 38.5 percent overall (25-65) and hit on only three of 22 three-point attempts. The Dukes were outrebounded 43-33, and Drexel attempted 36 free throws – making 22 – to JMU's 10 attempts (made six).
Drexel's largest first-half lead was 27-14 at the 10:16 mark, and the Dragons led 34-28 at halftime. JMU had leads of 43-41 on Caskill's tip-in field goal with 13:45 remaining in the game and 45-44 on another Caskill tip in with 12:42 left, but Drexel went in front to stay 46-45 with 11:45 to play on Eric Schmieder's driving layup.
Schmieder led Drexel with 21 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Robert Battle had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Tim Whitworth 12 points. Each Drexel starter played 35 or more minutes. Schmieder hit on six of nine shots, including three of five three-point attempts. Battle had 17 first-half points but was held without a field goal during the final half.
Fanning had 15 points,
Chris Williams and
Ron Anderson 11 points and Caskill 10 points for JMU. Anderson had eight rebounds while playing 35 minutes off the bench and Caskill six rebounds.
