WILMINGTON, N.C. (1/19/2002) – Brett Blizzard, Craig Callahan and Anthony Terrell combined for all but 10 of North Carolina Wilmington's points, and the Seahawks held off a late JMU rally for a 63-59 victory.
Holding JMU to four field goals during the opening 14 minutes of the final half, UNC Wilmington raised a 30-29 halftime lead to 55-42 and then survived a rally during which the Dukes twice pulled to within two points.
JMU got six points directly off offensive rebounds during its rally and climbed to within 59-57 on
Jerian Younger's short jumper with 1:44 to play. Blizzard's driving 10-footer gave UNC Wilmington a 61-57 lead with 1:17 to play, but
David Fanning's 16-footer at the 1:01 mark got JMU to within 61-59.
JMU had a final chance to score after the Seahawks' Lou Chapman missed on the first shot of a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 24 seconds left (UNCW had retained possession with 0:29 left on an offensive rebound), but
Chris Williams' driving shot with three seconds remaining bounced off the rim. UNC Wilmington's Stewart Hare then all but sealed the Seahawk win with two free throws with 1.6 seconds left.
Blizzard had 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting; Callahan had 16 points; and Terrell had 12 points on six-of-eight shooting and eight rebounds. Blizzard had three three-point field goals.
Dwayne Broyles, who hit on four straight three-point shots during the first half, led JMU with 17 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Williams, who had JMU's only three field goals during the opening 10 minutes of the second half, finished with 12 points.
Pat Mitchell added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Dukes.
JMU played for the third straight game without
Tim Lyle (knee problem), and the Dukes got a season-low seven points from Fanning, the CAA's top scorer entering the game. Fanning missed two days of practice before the game because of a foot problem.
JMU led 17-10 with 12:03 left in the first half, but UNC Wilmington rallied to tie the score at 22-22 at the 6:19 mark and went in front to stay, 30-29, on Hare's three-point play with 53 seconds left in the opening half.
UNC Wilmington shot 52.0 percent (13-25) during the second half and 46.3 percent (25-54) overall to JMU's 39.2 percent (20-51). JMU had a 35-32 rebounding edge.
