NEWARK, Del. (1/3/2002) – Ryan Iversen hit on the second of two free throws with 3.7 seconds left to cap a 7-0 Delaware rally during the final 3:19 and give the Blue Hens a 51-50 victory over JMU.
JMU matched the game's largest lead, 50-44, on
Dwayne Broyles' field goal with 4:31 left but didn't score again while having a four-game winning streak snapped. The Dukes missed four shots and had three turnovers during the final 3:27.
Delaware, playing its first season in the Colonial Athletic Association, got to within 50-47 on Vohn Hunter's three-point field goal with 3:19 left and tied the score at 50-50 on Mike Ames' three-pointer with 1:53 remaining. JMU then missed a shot and each team had a turnover before Delaware got possession with 58 seconds remaining. The Blue Hens missed on a field goal attempt as the shot clock was about to expire, but they rebounded and kept the ball until Iversen was fouled on a shot attempt during the final seconds. Following a timeout after Iversen's successful second free throw, a JMU length-of-the-floor pass was intercepted, allowing Delaware to run out the clock.
The teams were tied at 25-25 at halftime, and neither led by more than three points during the final half until JMU took its 50-44 advantage.
David Fanning led JMU with 16 points, and Broyles was the Dukes' only other double-figure scorer with 12 points. JMU shot only 36.4 percent (20-55) and attempted only four free throws, hitting on each try.
Delaware shot only 34.0 percent (18-53) but hit on nine of 12 free throws and had a 37-34 rebounding advantage. Ames had 14 points and Hunter 13 for the Hens.
