HARRISONBURG, Va. (1/30/2002) –
David Fanning scored 14 of his team-high 18 points during the second half as JMU pulled away from Old Dominion for a 67-61 victory.
Fanning had two two-point field goals and a three-pointer as JMU raised a 28-26 halftime lead to 35-30 with 14:57 to play, and the Dukes went on to lead by 10 points twice during the final five minutes. Old Dominion got to within four points during the final minute, but JMU held on by hitting on six straight free throws during the final 29 seconds.
Fanning had a three-pointer with 7:23 left after Old Dominion cut a 41-32 deficit to 44-42, and he had a two-pointer and two free throws to help the Dukes increase their margin to 53-44 with 5:01 remaining.
JMU led 59-49 on
Ian Caskill's layup with 2:26 left and held on behind two free throws by
Tim Lyle at the 29-second and 21-second marks and two by
Daniel Freeman with two seconds remaining.
Fanning hit on six of 14 shots, including three of six from three-point range, and JMU also got strong efforts from Lyle and
Kenny Whitehead with 13 points each. Lyle, who had been slowed by a knee problem, played for the first time since Jan. 5, and Whitehead also had six rebounds and three blocked shots while hitting on each of his five field goal tries and establishing a career scoring high. Lyle hit on three of five shots, including two of three three-point tries.
JMU built a 19-8 lead 10 minutes into the game, but Old Dominion pulled into a 19-19 tie by the 5:54 mark of the first half and led 26-23 two minutes before halftime. A
Chris Williams field goal at the 1:25 mark, a Fanning free throw with 38 seconds remaining and dunk from Whitehead at the 31-second mark allowed JMU to take its 28-26 halftime lead.
JMU shot 44.9 percent (22-49) to Old Dominion's 38.7 percent (24-62) and had seven three-point field goals. Old Dominion had a 41-33 rebounding edge.
Ricardo Marsh led the Monarchs with a career-high 27 points and 11 rebounds. He hit on 10 of 16 shots.
Caskill added seven points and a season-high four blocked shots for JMU.
