MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (11/20/2002) – Drew Schifino's three-point play with 2:14 remaining put West Virginia in front to stay, and the Mountaineers held on for a 70-67 victory over JMU.
Schifino's fastbreak layup and free throw gave the Mountaineers a 68-65 lead after JMU erased a 12-point second-half deficit. The Dukes got to within 68-67 on
Ian Caskill's layup with 2:02 left, but West Virginia's Kevin Pittsnogle scored off a rebound to give his team a 70-67 lead with 48 seconds left. JMU missed on three three-point field goals during the final 40 seconds.
JMU led 38-32 at halftime behind
David Fanning's 13 points, but an 18-0 scoring burst gave West Virginia a 52-40 advantage with 12:36 to play. The Dukes led 40-34 a minute into the second half but didn't score again until 12:22 remained.
JMU got back into the game behind Caskill and
Kenny Whitehead, who combined for 21 second-half points, but led late in the game only briefly, 63-62 on Caskill's layup with 3:11 left.
Caskill finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Whitehead with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Fanning had 15 points and
Dwayne Broyles 12 for JMU. Caskill hit on six of 11 shots and Whitehead on seven of 12. Broyles had four three-point field goals in his first double-figure scoring effort of the season, and Fanning had three three-pointers.
JMU shot 42.6 percent (26-61) and West Virginia 45.9 percent (28-61), but the Mountaineers hit on 57.1 percent (16-28) of their shots during the final half. JMU hit on seven of 12 three-point attempts during the first half but on only two of eight tries during the final 20 minutes. JMU had a 42-31 rebounding advantage but committed 14 turnovers to only six by West Virginia.
