WASHINGTON, D.C. (11/25/2002) – Six-foot-eight forward Mike Sweetney scored 12 points as Georgetown took an early 23-9 lead, and the Hoyas went on to beat JMU 80-60.
Georgetown shot 54 percent (19-35) while taking a 45-28 halftime lead and raised the margin to 61-32 by the 14:00 mark of the second half. The game's final margin was the closest JMU got the rest of the way.
Sweetney finished with 21 points on nine-of-17 shooting, and he had a game-high nine rebounds in 20 minutes. Six-foot-6 swingman Gerald Riley added game highs of 23 points and six assists for Georgetown. He hit on four straight shots from three-point range in 24 minutes.
Sweetney, who finished the first half with 12 points, played only nine minutes before the break because of collecting two personal fouls, but the Hoyas hit on three three-point field goals during the last 10 minutes of the half. Riley then scored his team's first six points of the second half on three-pointers.
Georgetown had a 49-32 rebounding edge and had 18 offensive rebounds to JMU's five. The Hoyas shot 43.7 percent (31-71) for the game and JMU 40.4 percent (21-52).
JMU got 20 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots from
Ian Caskill, who had his second straight career scoring high.
David Fanning added 12 points and four assists for the Dukes.
Caskill hit on seven of 12 shots a game after putting together a 17-point, 11-rebound effort in JMU's season-opening 68-66 win at Furman Nov. 22. The double-figure scoring effort also was the second of the season for Fanning.
