CAGUAS, Puerto Rico (12/22/2002) – Aaron Davis' three-point field goal with 1:51 to play gave Northeastern the lead after the Huskies trailed by 13 points in the second half, and they went on to beat JMU 69-66 in the consolation finals of the San Juan Shootout.
Davis' shot from the left wing gave Northeastern a 68-66 lead and completed a rally that saw the Huskies erase a 59-46 deficit during the final 11:37. JMU had 19 of its season-high 27 turnovers during the second half and was outscored 23-7 after leading by 13 points.
After Davis' key field goal, JMU had three turnovers and missed two shots. The Dukes couldn't convert on a contested layup with 17 seconds to play but got the ball back when Northeastern missed two free throws with 14 seconds left. However, JMU threw the ball away, and Northeastern got its final point on a Cornellius Wright free throw with four seconds left. The Dukes rebounded Wright's missed second shot but didn't get off a final field goal attempt.
JMU trailed 36-33 at halftime but outscored Northeastern 26-10 to start the second half and take its 59-46 lead.
The Dukes shot 48 percent (23-48) to Northeastern's 39 percent (24-61) and had a 39-32 rebounding advantage but couldn't overcome their turnovers.
Ian Caskill led JMU in scoring with 17 points on six-of-seven shooting and had eight rebounds.
Dwayne Broyles had 12 points,
Pat Mitchell 11 points and 10 rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench, and
Kenny Whitehead 11 points for the Dukes. Mitchell hit on four of five shots and had three assists before fouling out.
