NORFOLK, Va. (2/16/2002) – Pierre Greene's three-point field goal with 29 seconds to play broke a 68-68 tie, and host Old Dominion went on to beat JMU 73-68.
JMU erased deficits of eight points at halftime and 11 points during the second half, but Greene had seven points during the final 4:50 as the Monarchs broke a five-game losing streak.
JMU got its only lead of the final half and its first since 1-0 at 61-60 on
David Fanning's three free throws with 6:22 to play, but Old Dominion went up 62-61 on two Ricardo Marsh free throws with 6:11 left and didn't trail again.
JMU tied the score at 62-62 and at 68-68 on a
Pat Mitchell follow shot with 40 seconds remaining before Greene's quick three-pointer from the left of the key put the Monarchs in front to stay. Fanning then missed on two three-point attempts, and Old Dominion's Kiah Thomas hit on two free throws with 7.9 seconds left for the final margin.
Old Dominion dominated the rebounding 22-9 during the first half and pulled away from a 23-22 lead with 7:54 left in the period to a 35-25 edge at the 1:43 mark and a 37-29 advantage at halftime.
The Monarch lead was 46-35 with 16:24 left to play before a 14-4 scoring burst – including seven points by
Dwayne Broyles and five by Fanning – got JMU to within 50-49 with 10:59 to play.
Old Dominion took a 56-51 lead on three-pointers by Rasheed Wright and Troy Nance, but JMU pulled into a 58-58 tie on Mitchell's field goal with 8:35 left. The Dukes then had only three field goals the rest of the way, all directly off offensive rebounds.
Fanning had a game-high 22 points, Broyles 17 points and Mitchell 10 points and 10 rebounds for JMU, which shot 39.0 percent (23-59).
Marsh led four Old Dominion players in double figures in scoring and finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Monarchs shot 43.6 percent (24-55) and had a 41-30 rebounding advantage.
