HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/4/2002) – Cody Carbaugh's field goal with 1:06 to play put William & Mary in front to stay, and the Tribe hit on five of six free throws during in the final 35 seconds in a 63-58 win over JMU.
Carbaugh scored on a driving jumper from the lane to break a 56-56 tie, and William & Mary erased a six-point deficit during the final six minutes. JMU didn't get another field goal after taking a 53-47 lead with 6:48 remaining on
David Fanning's fastbreak layup.
JMU got to within 58-57 on a
Pat Mitchell free throw with 38 seconds left, but two Carbaugh free throws with 35 seconds to play gave William & Mary a 60-57 lead. A Mitchell free throw at the 17-second mark pulled JMU to within 60-58, but the Tribe got two Zeb Cope free throws with 15 seconds left and one from Sherman Rivers with seven seconds to play.
William & Mary led 47-43 on Carbaugh's three-pointer with 11:36 left but didn't get another field goal until Nick D'Antoni's three-pointer and free throw gave it a 55-53 lead with 3:12 left.
JMU got to within 31-29 at halftime after trailing 28-18 with 7:28 left in the first half, and there were nine second-half lead changes before D'Antoni's four-point play.
Mike Johnson had 11 points and Adam Hess, Rivers and Carbaugh 10 each for William & Mary. The Tribe had only seven second-half field goals (20 attempts) after hitting on 12 of 24 first-half shots, but it was successful on 14 of 19 free throws during the second half.
JMU shot only 39.3 percent (22-56) from the field and hit on only 12 of 22 free throws (54.5 percent). The Dukes had a 38-26 rebounding edge.

Chris Williams 11 points and Mitchell 10 points and 10 rebounds for JMU.
