HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/6/2002) –
David Fanning's layup at the final buzzer gave JMU a 67-65 home victory over Virginia Commonwealth.
JMU erased a three-point deficit during the game's final 2:41 and won when
Dwayne Broyles connected with Fanning on a length-of-the-floor pass after the host Dukes had gotten a timeout with 0.5 seconds to play.
JMU's
Pat Mitchell rebounded a missed shot by VCU's Josh Graham, and the Dukes called timeout to set up their final play. Fanning ran off a pick near the top of the key at the JMU end of the court and easily scored after receiving Broyles' pass over several Ram defenders.
VCU led 63-60 on Domonic Jones' three-point field goal with 2:41 remaining, but JMU got two Broyles free throws with 2:17 left and a three-point play from Fanning with 1:35 left to lead 65-63. The Rams tied the score at 65-65 on two Jones free throws with 1:25 left. Each team then had a turnover, and both missed shots before Fanning's final points.
Neither team led by more than four points until a Mitchell field goal during the first minute of the second half gave JMU a 38-33 edge (the Dukes had led 36-33 at halftime). VCU rallied to lead 58-54 on Graham's field goal with 6:39 left, but consecutive Broyles field goals pulled JMU into a 58-58 tie with 4:55 left.
Fanning was the game's top scorer with 23 points, including 16 during the first half when he had four three-pointers. Broyles had 12 points and Mitchell and
Kenny Whitehead 10 each for JMU.
Mitchell and
Ian Caskill each had nine rebounds for the Dukes, who had a 45-24 overall rebounding advantage, including a 19-7 edge in offensive rebounds.
Jones led VCU with 16 points and six rebounds, and Willie Taylor added 14 points and L.F. Likcholitov 11.
JMU shot 42.1 percent (24-57) and the Rams 41.4 percent (24-58).
