HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/9/2002) – Craig Callahan led four North Carolina Wilmington players in double figures in scoring with 17 points, and the Seahawks took control by limiting JMU to 20 percent shooting during the first half of a 69-61 victory over JMU.
JMU hit on only five of 25 first-half shots and went nearly 12 minutes without a field goal during a span to close the first half and open the final period. UNC Wilmington led 35-23 at halftime and 60-41 with six minutes left in the game.
UNC Wilmington led 16-7 after six minutes, and the Seahawks' lead was never less than the final margin after a Brett Blizzard three-pointer gave them a 21-11 lead with 11:46 left in the first half.
JMU, which shot 45.2 percent (14-31) during the second half, got to within 61-52 with 3:40 left and 63-54 with 2:27 to play, but the Seahawks hit on four of six free throws to lead 67-55 with 49 seconds remaining.
After
Jerian Younger's field goal got JMU to within 23-15 with 10:20 left in the first half, JMU didn't score again from the field until
Chris Williams' field goal with 18:28 left in the game got the Dukes to within 40-25. JMU did hit on 13 of 17 free throws during the first half when UNC Wilmington committed 11 fouls.
The Dukes shot 33.9 perecent from the field (19-56) and hit on 19 of 31 free throws (61.3 percent).
UNC Wilmington shot 42.6 percent (23-54) from the field and hit on 19 of 29 free throws (65.5 percent). The Seahawks had a 44-40 rebounding edge and had nine turnovers to JMU's 11.
Callahan also had a team-high eight rebounds for UNC Wilmington, and the Seahawks got 14 points from Brett Blizzard, 13 from Anthony Terrell and 10 from Tim Burnette.
David Fanning led JMU with 12 points, and
Ian Caskill had 10 poins and six rebounds.
