RICHMOND, Va. (3/1/2002) –
Dwayne Broyles had eight straight second-half points as JMU raised a 48-43 lead to 56-43, and the Dukes went on to top William & Mary 78-67 in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum.
JMU led 20-10 during the first half and by 10 points twice during the final half after holding a 33-27 halftime edge, but William & Mary pulled to within 48-43 with 10:45 to play. Broyles then had a three-point field goal with 9:52 to play, a two-pointer on a fastbreak at the 9:24 mark, and a three-pointer at the 8:40 mark for a 56-43 JMU advantage.
The Dukes raised the lead to 63-44 on
Tim Lyle's three-pointer with 7:02 remaining. The Tribe cut the lead to 66-55 on Sherman Rivers' fastbreak field goal with 4:02 left, but two
David Fanning free throws and a
Charlie Hatter layup on a fastbreak gave JMU a 70-56 lead with 3:32 left.
Fanning led JMU with 19 points and hit on nine of 10 free throws. A miss on his final free throw try of the game – with JMU leading 78-64 with 12 seconds left – ended a streak of 28 straight successful free throw tries for the junior guard.
Jerian Younger, who started in place of injured forward
Pat Mitchell (ankle), and Broyles each had 11 points for JMU, and
Kenny Whitehead had 10 points off the bench. Younger hit on five straight field goal attempts.
JMU's
Chris Williams just missed a triple-double, collecting nine points, a career-high 13 rebounds and a career-high-tying nine assists.
The Dukes shot 42.9 percent (25-57) to William & Mary's 36.8 percent (21-57), had a 46-33 rebounding edge, and had a season-low eight turnovers.
