RICHMOND, Va. (1/22/2003) – Troy Godwin's short jumper from the lane put Virginia Commonwealth ahead to stay with 1:37 left, and the Rams hit on seven of eight free throws during the final 49.5 seconds while defeating JMU 65-58.
JMU scored 14 straight second-half points to pull into a 52-52 tie, and the game was tied again at 56-56 before Godwin's decisive field goal.
Domonic Jones hit on one of two free throws with 49.5 seconds to play for a 59-56 VCU lead; and after
David Fanning got JMU to within 59-58 with two free throws with 36 seconds left, the host Rams got two free throws from Nick George at the 33.5-second mark and two from Jones at the 21.2- and 10.8-second marks.
Kenny Whitehead had six points and
Chris Williams five during the 14-0 rally that brought JMU from a 52-38 deficit with 9:31 remaining into the 52-52 tie. The Dukes tied the score on
Dwayne Broyles' three-point play with 3:59 left, but they didn't get another field goal.
JMU took a 10-2 lead less than five minutes into the game, but VCU rallied to lead 27-17 with 4:45 left in the first half and was in front 30-29 at halftime. The Ram lead was 43-33 by the 13:44 mark of the final half and reached 52-38 after JMU had only four field goals during the first 12 minutes of the final period.
VCU got 19 points from Jones and 15 from Willie Taylor and had a 40-35 rebounding advantage. The Rams shot 41.1 percent overall (23-56) and 33.3 percent from three-point range (6-18).
JMU put four players in double figures in scoring but shot a season-low 32.1 percent (17-53) overall and hit for only three three-point field goals in eight attempts. The Dukes hit on 21 of 28 free throws (75 percent).
Whitehead led JMU with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Broyles had 13 points, Fanning 12 points and
Ian Caskill 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Caskill hit on five of eight shots from the field, and Fanning hit on nine of 10 free throws.
