NORFOLK, Va. (1/25/2003) – Ricardo Marsh scored eight points during a 26-10 Old Dominion scoring run over the final 9:31 of the first half, and the Monarchs went on to beat JMU 74-56 in the teams' first meeting at Old Dominion's Constant Convocation Center.
JMU used a 17-3 scoring burst to take a 17-7 lead after just more than eight minutes but had only four more field goals before halftime and trailed 33-27 at the break. The Dukes got the first field goal of the second half, but Old Dominion scored the next five points and JMU wasn't closer than six points again.
Old Dominion led 55-36 with 8:58 left with Marsh scoring 10 points and Rasheed Wright six during the opening 11:02 of the final period and was ahead 63-40 with 5:34 left.
Ian Caskill had six points and
Chris Williams five as JMU, after giving up the game's first four points, moved to a 17-7 advantage on Williams' three-point field goal at the 11:57 mark of the first half. Old Dominion rallied to tie the score at 23-23 on two Rasheed Wright free throws with 4:04 left in the first half and went in front to stay, 27-25, on John Waller's three-pointer at the 1:52 mark.
Marsh led the Monarchs with 24 points and six rebounds, and Wright had 14 points and five rebounds. Marsh hit on eight of 12 field goal attempts and on eight straight free throws. Wright had all but two of his points during the second half and hit on nine straight foul shots.
David Fanning had 15 points, Caskill 10 points and seven rebounds, and Williams 10 points for JMU. Caskill hit on five of 10 shots and blocked two shots in 20 minutes of playing time. Williams had two three-point field goals in a game for the first time as a JMU player.
Old Dominion shot 43 percent (24-59) to JMU's 41 percent (20-47), and the Monarchs hit on 28 of 33 free throws to only two of four for JMU.
