HARRISONBURG, Va. (1/29/2003) – Adam Hess scored 18 of his game-high 23 points during the first half as William & Mary built a big lead and then held off a late JMU three-point shooting barrage for a 61-59 victory.
Hess, who entered the game as the CAA's second-leading scorer, hit on nine of 21 shots, including five from three-point range, for William & Mary, which led 34-24 at halftime and 56-40 with 7:48 to play. JMU then hit for five of its team-record-tying 13 three-pointers during the final 7:31 to get back into the contest, but the Dukes never could pull even.
David Fanning's sixth three-pointer and fourth of the final 5:35 got JMU to within 61-59 with 1:14 remaining, but the Dukes got only two more field goal attempts. JMU regained possession with 38 seconds to play when
Dwayne Broyles rebounded Adam Duggins' missed jumper. But William & Mary, which had only two fouls during the first 19:37 of the second half, slowed the Dukes by fouling four times within 13 seconds, and JMU didn't get off a shot until
Chris Williams' driving attempt missed with five seconds left.
Duggins rebounded Williams' miss and was fouled with 3.9 seconds to play. He missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw chance, but Broyles couldn't hit on a three-point try from beyond the top of the key as the horn sounded.
Hess had four three-pointers during the first half, and William & Mary hit on nine three-point field goal attempts for the game. He was the Tribe's only double-figure scorer, and he played 40 minutes. Hess also had four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Duggins added six points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots in 31 minutes for William & Mary.
Fanning had 20 points on seven-of-16 shooting for JMU, and his six three-pointers were a season high. He attempted 12 three-point shots.
Wes Miller added a career-high 15 points for the Dukes on five-of-10 shooting from three-point range. The double-figure scoring effort was the first of his career, and all of his shots were three-point tries.
JMU shot 46 percent (22-48) overall and 43 percent (13-30) from three-point range to William & Mary's 42 percent (23-55) overall and 39 percent (9-23) from three-point range, but the Dukes committed 13 turnovers to only four by the Tribe.
JMU also set a team record for fewest free throws in a game while hitting on two of three attempts. The Dukes attempted only a then-team-record-tying-low four free throws in their 74-56 loss at Old Dominion in their previous game.
