HARRISONBURG, Va. (1/4/2003) – Mike Slattery scored 16 points to pace four Delaware players in double figures in scoring in a 69-54 victory over JMU.
Delaware never trailed and used a 14-0 burst to take a 23-8 margin with 8:20 to play in the opening half. Mike Ames had nine points during the 14-0 run, including hitting on a three-pointer and on four straight free throw attempts. The lead was cut to 32-25 during the final minute of the period before the Blue Hens took a 34-25 halftime lead.
The margin reached 50-31 when Slattery, who had 10 points during the second half, hit a on three-pointer with 15:12 left. JMU didn't threaten again, getting only as close as 63-51 with 2:38 to play.
Ames, who hit on eight straight free throws, added 15 points for Delaware. Ryan Iversen came off the bench for 14 points, and Calvin Smith had 10 points and seven rebounds. Smith shared team-high rebounding honors with Dave Hindenlang with seven.
Chris Williams, who hit on six of nine shots, led JMU in scoring for the second consecutive game with 13 points, and he had five assists and four rebounds. He also didn't commit a turnover in 26 minutes.
Pat Mitchell added 10 points, and he and
Ian Caskill each had eight rebounds.
Delaware shot 47 percent (23-49) overall, 46 percent (6-13) from three-point range, and 71 percent (17-24) at the free throw. JMU shot 35 percent (20-57) overall, 22 percent (5-23) from three-point range and 45 percent (9-20) from the free throw line. JMU had 42 rebounds to 33 for Delaware.
