NEWARK, Del. (2/13/2003) – Ryan Iversen's three-point field goal with 24 seconds to play broke a 71-71 tie and lifted Delaware to a 74-71 victory over JMU.
JMU used a 12-0 scoring run to rally from a 56-47 second-half deficit but was outscored 6-1 during final 1:07. After
David Fanning gave the Dukes a 70-68 lead with 1:55 remaining with two free throws, Mike Slattery put Delaware ahead 71-70 at the 1:07 mark with a driving layup and free throw after being fouled. Slattery scored after the Blue Hens had tracked down an offensive rebound following a missed shot with 1:23 left.
JMU's
Dwayne Broyles tied the score at 71-71 by hitting on one of two free throws with 51 seconds left, but Delaware rebounded the second attempt and Iversen got the game's final points from the right wing.
Fanning missed on a long three-point attempt with seven seconds to play, and the Dukes couldn't get off a shot before the final horn after Slattery missed on two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining.
JMU trailed by nine points less than four minutes into the game and didn't lead until using its 12-0 second-half burst to go in front 59-56 on
Wes Miller's three-pointer with 9:14 to play. However, Delaware responded with eight straight points to lead 64-59 at the 7:04 mark, and JMU's only edge the rest of the way was on Fanning's free throws that made the score 70-68.
Kenny Whitehead led a balanced JMU attack with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Ian Caskill added 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, Broyles 14 points and Fanning 13 points and four assists.
Whitehead, who hit on eight of 11 field goals attempts, had his fourth double-double of the season, and Caskill's had his fifth. Fanning reached double figures in scoring for the 65th time during his career, matching the No. 10 mark in team history.
Miller had nine points and five assists and Caskill four assists and three blocked shots for JMU. Miller hit on three of five three-point field goal tries.
Mike Ames led five Delaware players in double figures in scoring with 15 points, and Calvin Smith had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Both teams hit on 29 of 61 shots overall (48 percent). JMU had a 38-32 rebounding edge and committed nine turnovers to only five for Delaware. The Dukes hit on five of 14 three-point tries (36 percent) and Delaware on six of 11 (55 percent).
