PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (11/20/04) –
Ray Barbosa scored a game-high 18 points, and JMU pulled away during the final four minutes to win 59-50 at La Salle in Dean Keener's first game as the Dukes' head coach.
JMU led 28-26 at halftime and 47-45 before outscoring the Explorers 12-5 during the final 3:52.
Chris Cathlin started the late Dukes' scoring run with a field goal, and Barbosa added a basket at the 3:12 mark for a 51-45 JMU lead. The Dukes' advantage went to 53-45 on two free throws by
Daniel Freeman with 2:18 left and to 55-45 on a field goal by
Jomo Belfor with 2:07 to play.
JMU had scored the first eight points of the second half to lead 36-26 with 17:18 left in the game.
Barbosa also had seven rebounds, two assists, three steals and two three-point field goals. He played 37 minutes and hit on eight of 19 shots.
Belfor added 10 points, four assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes, and
Cavell Johnson had eight points and a game- and career-high nine rebounds for JMU. Johnson also had a career-high three assists.
The Dukes shot 45.5 percent (25-55) overall from the field and 50.0 percent (13-26) during the second half. JMU also had a 41-30 rebounding edge.
The victory was only JMU's second on an opponent's floor to open a season during its 36-year NCAA varsity history. The other was a 68-66 win at Furman in 2002-03.
The Dukes were 1-11 in openers on opponents' floors previously.
