HARRISONBURG, Va. (11/27/04) –
Daniel Freeman scored 23 points and first-year Dukes head coach Dean Keener's initial first home outing was a success in an 82-70 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County.
Freeman was perfect from the field during the first period and helped the Dukes to a 46-26 halftime lead. He hit on all five of his first-half shots, three from three-point range, and scored 14 of his game-high points by the break. He finished 7-for-11 from the field overall and hit on a career-high five of six three-point attempts. His 23 points were only one point off his then-career scoring high.
The Dukes never trailed and were tied only after the opening field goals before a late outburst resulted in the big halftime advantage. JMU led 22-18 with 7:08 to play in the first half but running off a 20-4 scoring burst, capped by a Freeman layup with 1:06 remaining. The Retrievers cut the lead to 70-64 with 2:51 to play, but the Dukes scored the next 11 points.
Ray Barbosa hit eight of nine free throws and finished with 18 points for JMU. The Dukes also saw
Cavell Johnson swoop in for two dunks to highlight his 10 points, and
Gabriel Chami had 10 points. Johnson led JMU in rebounds with seven and blocked four shots.
UMBC received balanced scoring, led by Rob Gogerty's 16 points. Michael Knight and Rashad Bilal contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively. Andrew Feely scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high and career-tying high 16 rebounds.
