BOONE, N.C. (11/29/04) – Appalachian State started the second half with a 13-2 scoring run to extend a five-point lead to 16 and went on to beat JMU 78-69 in non-conference play.
JMU trailed 17-7 but rallied to within 29-27 on a
Cavell Johnson jumper with 4:07 remaining in the first half. The Mountaineers responded with a 7-0 run, capped by Chris McFarland's jumper, to extend the lead to 36-27.
Gabriel Chami's layup cut the lead to 38-33 at the half, but the Dukes couldn't close the gap during the second period.
The Mountaineers took control at the outset of the final half with McFarland scoring nine points during the first 3:30 of the period to lead a 13-2 burst that ran the lead to 51-35. Appalachian State's defense also stymied the Dukes, holding them without a field goal for the first four minutes of the final half. JMU cut the lead to 58-46 on
Daniel Freeman's layup with 11:28 remaining but got no closer until the waning moments.
McFarland led all scorers with 20 points and had three of the Mountaineers' 11 three-point field goals.
Freeman had 18 points, Johnson 16,
Ray Barbosa 13, and Chami 10 for JMU. Chami had a team-high seven rebounds in 17 minutes.
