HARRISONBURG, Va. (12/4/04 – Mike Radziejewski's free throw with 5:44 left put Hofstra up to stay, 58-57, and the Pride went on to top JMU 78-75 in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.
Hofstra upped the lead to 74-66 on Aurimas Kieza's free throw with 30 seconds left before holding off a JMU rally. Field goals by
Cavell Johnson and
Daniel Freeman pulled JMU to within 74-70, but the Pride's Carlos Rivera hit on a free throw with 16 seconds left for a 75-70 Hofstra lead. Freeman got JMU to within 75-72 with a field goal with nine seconds remaining, but Hofstra got a free throw from Antoine Agudio and two from Kieza before JMU's
John Naparlo hit on a three-pointer at the final horn.
Hofstra led 25-15 with three minutes left in the first half, but JMU pulled to within 27-24 by halftime. The Pride increased its margin to 31-24 during the opening minute of the final half before JMU's
Ray Barbosa had four three-pointers as the Dukes outscored Hofstra 15-6 to take their first lead of the game, 39-37, with 14:20 to play. There were eight more lead changes and six ties over the next eight and a half minutes before Radziejewski gave Hofstra its 58-57 advantage.
JMU last led on Freeman's three-pointer with 6:32 remaining.
Hofstra led by as many as 10 points during the opening period (25-15 at 3:00) when both teams shot poorly. The Pride hit on only 27 percent (8-30) of its field goal attempts and the Dukes only 29 percent (9-31) during the first half.
Freeman had career highs of 27 points and six assists and grabbed six rebounds for JMU. The Dukes also got 16 points from Barbosa, career highs of 11 points and five rebounds from
Gabriel Chami and 10 points and nine rebounds from Johnson.
JMU shot only 41.8 percent overall and was out-rebounded 40-35. The Dukes hit on 10 of 21 three-point attempts, and Freeman hit on 10 of 16 shots.
Hofstra had five players score in double figures, led by Loren Stokes with 21. Kieza and Antoine Agudio each scored 14 and Rivera and Radziejewski 11.
