BLACKSBURG, Va. (12/11/2004) – Carlos Dixon and Zabian Dowdell each had seven points as Virginia Tech raised a three-point lead to 20, and the Hokies went on to 77-53 win over JMU.
Virginia Tech led 17-14 when Dixon's three-pointer with 9:05 left in the first half ignited a 20-3 scoring run. Dowdell added two field goals and a free throw for a 25-14 Hokie lead at the 7:39 mark, and the lead reached 37-17 on a Coleman Collins layup 2:38 before halftime.
After trailing 42-24 at halftime, JMU closed to within 53-41 on a three-pointer by
Ray Barbosa with 11:11 to play, but Virginia Tech sealed the win with a 14-0 scoring burst to lead 67-41 with 8:07 left.
Cavell Johnson had 10 of his then-career-high 17 points during the opening 7:12 of the second half when JMU was cutting the Hokie lead to 12.
Johnson had 15 second-half points and led JMU in rebounding for the fifth straight game with nine. Barbosa had his fifth-straight double-figure scoring game with 14 points, and he had three three-point field goals.
The Dukes, who were without top scorer
Daniel Freeman, shot 40.9 percent. They were out-rebounded 39-31 and had 23 turnovers. Freeman missed the remainder of the season because of injury and rejoined the Dukes for a redshirt season in 2005-06.
Dixon led four Virginia Tech players in double figures in scoring with 19 points. He hit on seven of 11 shots, including three straight three-point attempts.
