ATLANTA, Ga. (12/15/2004) – Georgia Tech scored the game's first nine points and went on to beat JMU 72-47.
JMU went the first 5:32 without scoring, and the third-ranked Yellow Jackets raised their margin to 30-14 by halftime.
With
Ray Barbosa scoring 12 second-half points, the Dukes still were within 56-40 with 5:30 left before an 11-2 scoring burst allowed Georgia Tech to pull away.
JMU hit on only five of 28 shots during the first half but connected on 13 of 30 field goal attempts during the final half (43 percent).
Georgia Tech shot 36 percent during the first half and 58 percent (14-24) during the final period and took advantage of 26 JMU turnovers overall.
Barbosa led the Dukes with 15 points, all on three-point field goals, and
Cavell Johnson had 11 points.
David Cooper had eight points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes.
Cooper made his first start of the season after playing for the first time in 2004-05 Dec. 11 at Virginia Tech. He had been limited throughout the preseason and the first month of the regular season while recovering from a knee problem. JMU played its second straight game without
Daniel Freeman.
Georgia Tech, which improved to 7-0 after reaching the previous season's NCAA Tournament championship game, had four players in double figures in scoring, led by Isma'il Muhammad's 14 points.
