MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (12/18/2004) – West Virginia held JMU to two field goals during the first nine minutes while taking a 21-point lead and went on for a 77-48 non-conference victory.
JMU trailed 25-4 after nine minutes and hit on only six of 19 shots and committed 11 turnovers during the opening half as West Virginia built a 47-17 lead.
The victory was the seventh straight to open the season for West Virginia, and 11 Mountaineers scored during the contest.
Patrick Beilein came off the bench to lead West Virginia with 15 points on five-of-seven shooting from three-point range. The Mountaineers hit on 11 of 28 three-point shots overall.
JMU hit on 10 of 22 second-half shots to improve its accuracy to 39 percent overall (16-41). The Dukes had a 34-33 rebounding advantage and finished with 16 turnovers.
David Cooper was the Dukes' top scorer with 10 points. He also tied for the team rebounding high with five while playing 31 minutes.
The game completed a difficult road stretch during which the Dukes played at Virginia Tech, third-ranked Georgia Tech and West Virginia during an eight-day period.
