RICHMOND, Va. (2/18/2004) – Virginia Commonwealth hit for four three-point field goals while taking a 21-4 lead just more than five minutes into the game and went on for the 92-61 victory.
The Rams shot 64.3 percent (18-28) while taking a 52-32 lead by halftime, and they led by at least 13 points the rest of the way.
JMU got two three-point field goals from
Ray Barbosa and one from
Daniel Freeman to get to within 53-40 less than three minutes into the final half. However, VCU hit for a trio of three-pointers during the next two minutes to lead 64-43 with 15:30 remaining.
VCU had six players with nine or more points, including reserve Drew Johnson, who had all of his game-high 17 points during the final half. Johnson hit on five of eight three-point attempts in 16 minutes.
The Rams got 16 points and six rebounds from Jesse Pellot-Rosa and 15 points from Domonic Jones. Pellot-Rosa hit on five of six shots, including on two three-pointers, and also had six rebounds in 25 minutes. Jones played 21 minutes and hit on five of eight shots, including three three-pointers, and had four rebounds and two steals.
VCU shot 58.5 percent (31-53) overall and 59.1 percent (13-22) from three-point range. The Rams also had a 36-25 rebounding advantage, and 11 of their 12 players scored. In addition to their three double-figure scorers, three Rams finished with nine points. Eleven VCU players appeared for 13 or more minutes, and none played more than 25 minutes.
Dwayne Broyles led JMU with 16 points. He hit on six of 10 shots, including on two three-point field goals, and had two assists and five steals in 29 minutes. Freeman added 13 points and Barbosa 11 for the Dukes. Freeman hit on six of 11 shots in 21 minutes, and Barbosa had three three-pointers in 32 minutes.
