Dwayne Broyles had 20 points and
Ray Barbosa 19, and JMU led throughout the final 27 minutes in an 83-76 victory at William & Mary.
The Dukes went ahead to stay 22-21 on Barbosa's four-point play with 7:55 left in the first half, led 39-29 at halftime and held off the host Tribe throughout the final half. William & Mary got to within three points three times during the second half – the last at 75-72 with 1:20 remaining – but JMU hit on six of eight free throws and got a field goal from Barbosa to hold on for the win.
Broyles hit on seven of eight free throws during the final 2:07, and Barbosa's field goal with 16 seconds left gave the Dukes an 81-74 edge.
After William & Mary got to within 75-72 on Adam Hess' layup off a rebound, JMU got a free throw from
Chris Williams with 50.6 seconds to play for a 76-72 advantage. Broyles then hit on two free throws with 43.2 seconds remaining and on one of two with 25.8 seconds to play – both times after he rebounded William & Mary missed shots.
Hess pulled the Tribe to within 79-74 by hitting on two of three foul shots with 18.9 seconds left, but Barbosa got a layup on a long pass on the ensuing in-bounds play to raise JMU's lead to seven. Corey Cofield's field goal with 10.8 seconds to play pulled William & Mary to within 81-76, but Broyles hit on two free throws with 9.2 seconds remaining for the final margin.
William & Mary led 19-11 less than nine minutes into the game, but JMU used a 28-8 scoring run to take control and lead 39-27 late during the first half. Eight Dukes scored during the 28-8 burst with none having more than five points. JMU had four three-pointers during the final 9:14 of the opening period.
Broyles hit on 10 of 11 free throws and increased his JMU career scoring total to 992 points. Barbosa hit on seven of 11 shots from the field, and the Dukes also got 12 points from
Daniel Freeman and 11 points and six rebounds from
David Cooper.
JMU shot 52 percent (27-52), its best shooting effort since its season-opener against Furman, and the Dukes hit on 22 of 30 free throws (73 percent).
William & Mary had a 40-27 rebounding advantage and had 15 offensive rebounds. The Tribe shot 43 percent (27-63).
Hess had 27 points, including 24 during the second half, and Cofield 25 for the Tribe, and both had 10 rebounds.
