RICHMOND, Va. (3/5/2004) – North Carolina Wilmington's John Goldsberry broke a 39-39 tie with a field goal with 1:42 to play, and the Seahawks held on to beat JMU 44-41 in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum.
JMU led only briefly but pulled into the 39-39 tie on
Dwayne Broyles' steal and layup with 2:16 to play. Goldsberry then had his key bucket – a 12-footer with the shot clock running down.
JMU got two shots and two offensive rebounds before turning the ball over on its next possession, and Goldsberry hit on two free throws with 25 seconds to play for a 43-39 UNC Wilmington lead. Broyles' field goal with 14 seconds left cut the lead to 43-41, but the Seahawks' Halston Lane hit on a free throw with 7.8 seconds remaining, and JMU's
David Cooper couldn't connect on a three-point try at the final horn.
Broyles led JMU with 19 points and 11 rebounds – JMU's only double-double of the season – while UNC Wilmington didn't have a double-figure scorer.
Daniel Freeman added eight points and five rebounds for JMU.
JMU shot 32 percent (13-41) and the Seahawks 29 percent (14-49). JMU had 17 turnovers and UNC Wilmington 10, and the Dukes had a 35-33 rebounding advantage.
UNC Wilmington led 24-20 at halftime but was limited to four field goals while shooting 18 percent (4-22) during the final half. Broyles had 12 second-half points and pulled JMU into a 32-32 tie with a free throw with 7:28 left.
JMU's first lead, 35-34, came on
Cavell Johnson's three-pointer with 5:50 left, and the Dukes were up 37-36 on
Chris Williams' free throw with 4:14 left. UNC Wilmington didn't trail again after taking a 38-37 lead on Lane's two free throws with 3:33 remaining.
