MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (9/18/2004) – West Virginia pulled away with two touchdowns during a 45-second span of the second quarter and beat JMU 45-10.

The teams played a scoreless first quarter, but the sixth-ranked Division I-A Mountaineers got the game's first touchdown during the opening minute of the second period and took control late during the period to lead 21-0 by halftime.

West Virginia raised the lead to 14-0 with 3:12 left in the half when Rasheed Marshall hit Chris Henry on a five-yard scoring pass to complete a 10-play, 72-yard drive. The 4-0 Mountaineers then scored again on the next play from scrimmage when Adam Lehnortt returned a JMU fumble 21 yards for a touchdown 2:58 before halftime.

West Virginia got another quick touchdown early during the third quarter to lead 28-0 when Kay-Jay Harris scored on an eight-yard run, a play that was set up by a second JMU turnover. Harris scored at the 12:00 mark three plays after the Mountaineers recovered a bad JMU center snap at the Dukes' 23-yard line.

Marshall completed 17 of 22 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns to lead a West Virginia offense that had 370 yards. Henry caught seven passes for 74 yards and two scores, and Harris ran 22 times for 63 yards and a touchdown.

JMU gained 220 yards after trailing the Mountaineers only 163-119 in total offense at halftime.

Alvin Banks ran 30 times for 109 yards, his sixth career 100-yard game-rushing effort for the Dukes.

West Virginia had gotten the game's first points during the opening minute of the second quarter when Jason Colson scored on a one-yard run, capping a 14-play, 57-yard drive.

The Mountaineers' second touchdown drive followed JMU's best scoring chance of the opening half. The Dukes moved 48 yards in 10 plays to the West Virginia 28, but David Rabil couldn't hit on a 44-yard field goal try with 6:55 left in the half. Rabil had been successful on his first two field goal tries of the season and on 12 of his first 13 college attempts.

Rabil kicked a 32-yard field goal with 6:07 left during the third period to get JMU to within 28-3, capping a 13-play, 52-yard series.

West Virginia answered with a 48-yard David Cooper field goal with 2:38 left during the third quarter for a 31-3 advantage and got two touchdowns during a 4:20 span of the fourth quarter to lead 45-3 with 5:50 remaining.

JMU's final points came on a 35-yard fumble return by Brandon Beach. Beach picked up the loose ball after Rodney McCarter hit West Virginia's Charles Hales as he set up to pass.

JMU's defensive leaders included Akeem Jordan and Tony LeZotte with 12 tackles and McCarter with 11.
