DUKES DEFEAT WILLIAM & MARY 55-47 IN MEN'S BASKETBALL
Game Statistics
The Dukes raised their overall record to 3-9 and their league mark to 1-3. William and Mary dropped to 4-9 with its fourth consecutive loss and remains the only winless team in league play at 0-4.
Barbosa, who finished with a team-high 19 points, netted seven during the decisive run, including a three-pointer that capped the outburst and gave the Dukes a 49-38 advantage with 3:43 to play. Sophomore forwards Chris Cathlin (Virginia Beach, Va./Shenandoah Valley Academy) and Cavell Johnson (Middleburg, Va./Notre Dame Academy) also contributed.
Cathlin tied the score at 38-38 with a layup and Johnson followed with a jumper. After Barbosa's driving layup and a missed shot attempt by the Tribe, Cathlin assisted on Johnson's next jumper to push the lead to 44-38. Barbosa connected for a pair of free throws and hit his three-pointer from deep range for the first double-digit lead by either team.
William and Mary would get no closer than seven, and the Dukes hit four of eight free throws in the closing minutes. Cathlin's slam dunk with nine seconds to play put the finishing touches on the victory.
Cathlin tied his career-high, first reached against Akron last season, with 15 points and snared eight rebounds. He was 6-of-10 from the field, 3-of-4 at the free throw line and had a game-high four steals. Johnson tallied 11 points and grabbed five rebounds.
W&M freshman guard Edwin Ofori Attah (Davidson, N.C./Statesville Christian) led all players with 21 points. Sophomore Corey Cofield (Newton, Mass./Roxbury Latin) chipped in with 11 points. Ofori Attah, Cofield and senior Nick D'Antoni (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Socastee) shared team-high rebounding honors with six apiece.
The Dukes committed just two turnovers in the second half and 14 in the game, a statistic that had ranged between 18 and 26 during the previous six games. JMU shot 39.6 percent (19-48) to W&M's 29.4% (15-51). The Dukes had a 37-34 rebounding advantage.
JMU ventures to the University of Delaware on Saturday (Jan. 15) for its next Colonial Athletic Association tilt with a 7:30 tipoff.
