TOWSON DEFEATS DUKES 86-69 IN MEN'S BASKETBALL

TOWSON, Md. (1/19/05) – Towson placed four players in double figures in scoring and pulled away during the second half to defeat James Madison 86-69 in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball Wednesday.
JMU scored the first six points of the second half to cut a seven-point deficit to 41-40 but then had only one field goal during the next 10:10 as Towson took control. The JMU drought from the field allowed the Tigers to take a 63-48 lead with 8:33 remaining, and they led by at least 10 points the rest of the way. The Dukes pulled to within 71-61 with 3:35 to play, but Towson got the next five points for a 76-61 edge with 2:48 remaining.
Towson raised its overall record to 5-11 and its CAA mark to 2-4 while JMU fell to 3-11 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Sophomore forward Jonathan Pease came off the bench to lead Towson with 17 points. He hit on six of eight shots from the field, including four of five three-point tries, and had six rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes.
Sophomore forward Holden Plack added 14 points off the bench, junior guard Cantrell Fletcher 13 points as a starter and sophomore guard Trevan Jackson 10 points off the bench for the Tigers. Towson got 45 points from its reserves, shot 46.3 percent (25-54) from the field, had a 41-33 rebounding edge and hit on 30 of 41 free throws.
JMU had but seven field goals during the second half and finished with a 36.0 percent (18-50) shooting mark from the field. The Dukes hit on 29 of 41 free throws but connected on but four of 20 three-point attempts.
A total of 54 fouls were called during the game.
Sophomore guard Ray Barbosa (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) led the Dukes with 20 points in 38 minutes.
Junior guard Jomo Belfor (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) and freshman center Gabriel Chami (Cordoba, Argentina/New Hampton) had career scoring highs of 18 and 17 points, respectively, for JMU. Belfor hit on 13 of 18 free throws and had five rebounds and three assists, and Chami hit on 13 of 16 free throws and had five rebounds.
JMU returns to action Saturday (Jan. 22) in a 7 p.m. home CAA game with George Mason.
