WILMINGTON, N.C., Oct. 18, 2005 – Junior Juho Karjalainen (Paimio, Finland/Aurjoki) and senior Adam Currey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) each scored goals as UNC Wilmington defeated visiting James Madison, 2-1, in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action Tuesday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
With the win, UNC Wilmington improved to 7-4-2 and 2-1-2 in the conference. JMU, meanwhile, see their four-game winning streak halted and dip to 8-4-1 and 4-2-0. UNCW's two goals are the most an opponent has scored against the Dukes this season.
Karjalainen opened the scoring on a penalty kick at 32:22. Junior Chris Murray (Roslyn Height, N.Y./Roslyn) was taken down in the box on the right side by a JMU defender leading to the scoring opportunity.
Midway through the second half, UNCW extended its lead to 2-0 on Currey's third goal of the season at the 68:18 mark. Murray started the play with a free kick at midfield that went to senior forward Sam Leger (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian). Leger beat his defender and slid a through ball behind the JMU defense to a streaking Currey on the left wing who chipped it over Dukes' junior goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park). UNCW looked to build upon that lead in the 83rd minute, but Trapp saved a shot from Murray who had broken in one-on-one on the right side.
The Dukes cut their deficit to 2-1 on junior Jon Britton's (Alpharetta, Ga./Pendleton (Fla.)) sixth goal of the season. Britton knocked in a rebound with 53 seconds remaining in regulation. Freshman Nick Zimmerman (Tampa Bay, Fla./Wharton) picked up an assist on the play after his initial shot was blocked by a UNCW defender.
Junior goalkeeper Brad Knighton (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) made a pair of saves on the afternoon for the Seahawks while facing nine shots. Trapp recorded four saves for the Dukes who were out shot 12-9 on the game.
Both teams return to action Oct. 21 with conference action. The Seahawks visit Northeastern for a 6 p.m. start while the Dukes head to William & Mary for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
