HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Oct. 27, 2005 - Senior midfielder Chrissy Arnone (Merrick, N.Y.) scored with 6:45 left in the second overtime as the Hofstra Women's soccer team pulled out a dramatic 1-0 win over James Madison, keeping its hopes alive for the top seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament.
With the victory, the Pride improves to 12-3-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, leaving it one game behind Virginia Commonwealth (9-0-1) for the top spot in the conference standings. Hofstra meets VCU on Saturday and can pull even with the Rams with a victory, while also earning the tiebreaker in the process. Hofstra also guaranteed itself an opening round bye in the CAA Tournament for the third year in a row by clinching no worse than a #2 seed. James Madison moves to 10-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 with the loss.
The game-winning goal was set up when Hofstra attempted to play a through ball up the middle. James Madison goalkeeper Jessica Hussey (Kanata, Ontario) came out of the box to attempt to clear the ball away, but Hofstra freshman forward Kacey O'Driscoll (Caherciveen, Ireland) leapt in front of Hussey and blocked the clearance with her face. The loose ball then bounced down at the top of the penalty box, where Arnone slipped in between two Dukes defenders and floated a shot into the right side of the net for the game-winner at the 103:15 mark.
The goal was Arnone's ninth of the season, moving her alone into sixth place on Hofstra's all-time career scoring list with 18 career goals. It was also her fifth game-winner of the year, which leads the Colonial Athletic Association. The nine goals this season eclipses her previous season high of eight, set last year.
Arnone's goal capped off a dramatic contest that featured wild momentum swings and numerous quality scoring chances. Hofstra hit the post or the crossbar four times in regulation, including two shots off the post late in the second half. Senior midfielder Ashley Shaban (Oakland, N.J.) cracked a 20-yard shot from straight out that hit the left post, while sophomore defender Marie Curtin hit a 25-yard shot from near the right sideline that sailed over Hussey's head and hit off the far post. Hussey also made a spectacular diving save of another 20-yard shot from Shaban in the final 10 minutes, just pushing the ball wide of the far post, while Arnone had a 12-yard shot inside the box with less than six minutes to play that was smothered by two defenders but managed to trickle through towards the goal before it was cleared off the line by a James Madison defender.
James Madison also had its chances as well. The Dukes also hit the crossbar in the first half on a 25-yard direct kick from sophomore midfielder Melanie Schaffer (Allison Park, Pa.) that hit the underside of the bar and bounced down off the goal line but did not go in.
