HARRISONBURG, Va., Dec. 4, 2005 -- Sophomore Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) scored a game-high 22 points to lead James Madison (1-0, 4-1) to a 69-54 win over Virginia Commonwealth (0-1, 4-1) in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Dukes won their third straight game while VCU lost for the first time this year.
JMU junior Shirley McCall (Collinsville, Va./Bassett) finished the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Junior Meredith Alexis (Hanover Township, Pa./Bishop Hoban) pulled down 15 boards while adding another six points for JMU.
The Dukes took the lead early in the first half as junior Andrea Benvenuto (Ancaster, Ontario/St. Mary's) and Young connected with three pointers for a 6-2 advantage at 15:57.
VCU kept the game close as junior Michele Cosel (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) scored 13 of her career-high 20 points in the first half on 5-for-7 shooting from the field. JMU pushed its lead to 29-22 at the end of the first half on 12-for-27 shooting from the field and 3-for-7 shooting from behind the arc.
VCU continued to put pressure on the Dukes' defense in the second half and cut the JMU lead to three points (40-37) with 12:52 left. The Dukes responded with seven unanswered points to push their lead to 10 points with 11:14 left to play.
JMU squashed any hope of a VCU comeback as Young and Benvenuto again connected on three pointers to push the JMU lead to 11 points (50-39 at 10:04).
Freshman Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake,Va./Great Bridge) ended the day with 14 points and six boards for the Rams while sophomore Krystal Vaughn (Baltimore, Md./Lake Clifton-Eastern) added another 11 points for VCU.
The Dukes never trailed in the game and had a lead of as great as 16 points.
