TENNESSEE THUMPS DUKES IN BASEBALL CHALLENGE

WILMINGTON, N.C. (2/25/05) – Tennessee freshman catcher J.P. Arencibia (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) and senior shortstop Eric King (Antioch, Calif./Los Medanos College) combined for 10 hits and four RBI to power the Volunteers to a 17-0 shutout of James Madison Friday night at the Hughes Brothers Baseball Challenge hosted by UNC Wilmington.

Arencibia, a 17^th-round draft choice by Seattle last June, went 5-for-6 with two of the Vols' nine doubles and a solo home run. His round-tripper was the third of the season. Arencibia holds the distinction of having tied Alex Rodriguez with 17 homers for Westminster Christian.

King, in his second season with the Vols, stroked five singles to raise his average 84 points to .484 on the season.

Sophomore right-hander Sean Watson (Miami, Fla./Florida Christian School) tossed six scoreless frames and combined with two others to hand JMU its first shutout since a 4-0 loss to Virginia Commonwealth in the 2002 Colonial Athletic Association Championship Tournament. Watson gave up two hits, fanned eight and walked two. He retired 15 in order from the final two outs of the first inning until there was one away in the sixth.

Two of the three hits managed by the Dukes were tallied by junior center fielder Skyler Doom (Yorktown, Va./York), who doubled in the first inning and notched a one-out single in the sixth. The only other hit was a ninth-inning single to right field by senior right fielder Sean Loso (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby).

The Dukes (0-2) face UNC Greensboro on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Brooks Field. The Spartans (4-1) were beaten for the first time this season when George Mason hung a 9-5 loss on them Friday afternoon as part of the Baseball Challenge. JMU is 2-0 all-time against the Spartans, having won a 1998 meeting in Wilmington, 6-1, and a 6-0 decision in Greensboro in 2002.
