DIAMOND DUKES CLIP KENT STATE, 8-6
HARRISONBURG, Va. (3/13/05) – James Madison sophomore shortstop Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) capped a five-run first inning with a three-run homer and the host Dukes went on to post an 8-6 win against Kent State Sunday afternoon in non-conference college baseball at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
The Dukes snapped a six-game losing streak and moved their record to 2-9 on the season. Kent State, which had taken three in a row from the Dukes including last Sunday's decision in Conway, S.C. slipped to 6-6.
Stoneburner would later add a double and finish the day 3-for-4 with the three RBI. Junior second baseman Michael Cowgill (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) also contributed three hits to the Dukes' season-high 14.
Sophomores Travis Risser (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) and Jacob Cook (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) combined for 7 1/3 innings of relief work for the Dukes as both factored in the decision. Risser was credited with the win, upping his record to 2-1, as he tossed four innings. He yielded a pair of six-inning runs and gave up six hits, walked two and fanned three. Cook notched his first career save, hurling 3 1/3 of one-hit shutout relief and striking out five in the process.
Junior third baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) and junior designated hitter Matt Sluder (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) each hit RBI singles in the first inning and were on base when Stoneburner hit his second homer in as many days and his third of the season.
The Golden Flashes engineered a two-out, bases-empty rally in the second inning to get right back into the contest. Junior catcher Todd Balduf (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) delivered an RBI single, and sophomore shortstop Emmanuel Burriss (Washington, D.C./Wilson) came through with a two-run single. The scoring was completed by junior center fielder Joe Tucker's (Canton, Ohio/Central Catholic) single that scored Burriss.
The Dukes pulled out to an 8-4 advantage in the fifth as junior center fielder Skyler Doom (Yorktown, Va./York) homered to right and extended his hitting streak to a career-best seven games. Freshman left fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) doubled in Cowgill and came around to score on a Schill single to center.
Sophomore third baseman Andrew Davis (Chillicothe, Ohio/Zane Trace) ended the day's scoring with a two-run doubled in the right-center gap in the sixth inning. | |||
