| MARYLAND EDGES DUKES 3-2 IN BASEBALL Box Score
Maropis, who finished the day with two hits, gave the Terps a 3-1 lead with his first homer of the season. The Terps had taken a 2-1 lead in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by senior first baseman Elliot Singletary (North Ft. Myers, Fla./North Ft. Myers) and senior right fielder Truan Mehl (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North). Maryland's first run came across in the second inning when Maropis raced home during a rundown between first and second on a stolen base attempt.
The Dukes claimed a 1-0 lead in the first as junior second baseman Michael Cowgill (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) scored on an infield out by junior third baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon). Cowgill had walked and advanced to third when freshman left fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) doubled for the seventh time this season.
Cowgill also scored the Dukes' other run, rambling in from second base as Kulbacki's grounder found its way through the middle of the infield for his second hit of the afternoon.
Freshman right-hander Mike Sufczynski (Darnestown, Pa./St. John's) gained his first collegiate decision for the Terps, working six innings in his first start. He scattered five hits, fanned three and walked one. Freshman right-hander Brad Taylor (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) worked 2 1/3 innings of two-hit shutout relief. Senior right-hander Justin Hulse (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) recorded the final two outs to get his first save of the year.
Sophomore left-hander David Rich (Smithstown, N.Y./Hauppauge) was hit with the loss for his first decision. He yielded all three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one. The Dukes got excellent relief from junior right-hander Pat Riley (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) and sophomore left-hander Jacob Cook (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis). Riley scattered four hits over 3 2/3 innings. Cook entered with a runner on third in the eighth and stymied a first-and-third running attempt by the Terps.
JMU junior center fielder Skyler Doom (Yorktown, Va./York) went 0-for-4 as his career-best seven-game hitting streak came to an end.
Game two of the series is Wednesday at 4 p.m. The game will be carried live on JMUSports.com.
