LIBERTY PULLS AWAY FOR 9-4 BASEBALL WIN OVER DUKES
HARRISONBURG, Va. (3/29/05) – Junior second baseman Michael Just (Woodcliffe Lake, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) went 4-for-4 and scored four times and junior left fielder Phillip Laurent (Cantrall, Ill./Calvary Academy) went 3-for-5 with three RBI to power Liberty past James Madison, 9-4, in non-conference college baseball Tuesday.
The Flames upped their record to 16-7 overall while dropping the Dukes to 7-14.
Senior designated hitter Jeff Brown (Cypress, Calif./Golden West College) looped a single into shallow center field that capped a three-run rally and gave the Flames a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning. Just started the inning with an infield hit and scored on a double down the third-base line by freshman first baseman Aaron Grijalva (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley). Laurent singled in Grijavla and scored the go-ahead run from second base with one out on Brown's only hit of the day.
Just and Laurent also drove in a run apiece in the sixth as the Flames began to pull away. Brown topped off the frame with a sacrifice fly for an 8-4 Liberty advantage.
The Dukes' grabbed the lead in the fourth when junior first baseman Matt Bristow (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) clubbed his third homer of the year, a two-run shot that put JMU up 3-2.
JMU sophomore shortstop Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) made it 4-2 with a double in the fifth inning. The Dukes proceeded to load the bases, but the threat was squelched on an outstanding defensive play by junior third baseman Chad Miller (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Arapahoe), who snared Nate Schill's (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) grounder that appeared destined through the hole and retired his opposite at first.
Freshman left-hander Ryan Page (Cranberry Township, Pa./Senca Valley) did not get the decision for the Flames, but pitched three shutout innings while his team took control. He gave up three hits, walked no one and fanned three.
Just and Laurent were the only Flames to collected more than one hit. Stoneburner and Bristow were the only Dukes with two hits.
