MARYLAND DOUBLES JMU IN BASEBALL, 6-3
HARRISONBURG, Va., April 26, 2005 – Redshirt freshman right-hander Mike Sufczynski (Darnestown, Md./St. John's) tossed seven shutout innings to lead the Maryland Terrapins to a 6-3 victory over host James Madison Tuesday afternoon in non-conference college baseball at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
Sufczynski scattered seven hits, six singles and a double, walked three and struck out one to earn his second win against JMU this season while improving his record to 4-0.
The Terps took a 3-0 lead after two innings against sophomore right-hander Clay McKim (Hanvoer, Pa./Delone Catholic), who was making his first start for the Dukes after 15 career appearances out of the bullpen. Senior center fielder Truan Mehl (Overland Park, Kan./Hutchinson C.C.) singled with two out in the first, stole second and scored on a single to left by senior designated hitter Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md./Riverdale Baptist) for the game's first run.
Senior catcher Bobby Ryan's (Damascus, Md./Radford) single, the third of the inning, drove in the Terps' second run. The third run, which was unearned, scored as junior third baseman Jason Von Behren (Sherrard, Ill./Navarro C.C.) raced home on a fielder's chose by freshman second baseman Joe Palumbo (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic).
The score held 3-0 until the eighth when the Dukes' third of four errors set up the Terps' fourth run.
Sophomore first baseman Dan Santobianco (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) launched his seventh homer of the season and the Dukes' 50th overall to account for all the JMU runs, in the eighth. Santobianco finished the day 3-for-4. The Dukes have now hit 22 homers in the last nine games.
Maryland added an insurance run and tacked on another in the ninth. Junior right fielder Matt Maropis (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) plated the first run with an infield single with the bases loaded. Mehl, who finished 2-for-4, followed with a sacrifice fly.
Freshman right fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) added a pair of hits for JMU, including a school-freshman-record 17th double. He helped the Dukes out-hit the Terps 11-9, the third time in four loses that JMU had more hits than its foe. JMU left 10 runners stranded, hit into a double play and had two runners picked off base. |
