BASEBALL DUKES FALL AT GEORGE WASHINGTON, 8-7
ARLINGTON, Va., April 27, 2005 – George Washington used a six-run sixth inning and went on to post an 8-7 victory against visiting James Madison Wednesday afternoon in non-conference college baseball at Barcroft Park.
The Colonials completed a season two-game sweep of the Dukes and improved to 26-13 overall. JMU, which has dropped four of five, fell to 17-25.
Senior catcher Joe Michalski (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) capped a 3-2 pitch just inside the line in left field for a two-run double, both unearned, to give the Atlantic 10 members a 5-4 lead in the big inning. Michalski came around to score on a single to right field by junior right fielder Brad Rosenblat (New Orleans, La./Newman) for a 6-4 advantage.
The Dukes got one run back quickly as sophomore catcher Dan Santobianco (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) lined a homer to right-center to lead off the seventh.
In the eighth, junior center fielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, Ga./Fayette Co.) connected for a two-out, two-run homer that proved to be the difference in the game. His blast to right field gave GWU a three-run cushion, which it would need in the top of the ninth.
Junior third baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) led off the JMU ninth with a sharp single to center field for his second hit of the day. Santobianco followed with a towering homer to left-center, his third homer in two games and ninth of the season. All of his homers have come in the last 16 games.
Junior left-hander Dan Pfau (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central), who started the ninth, retired the next three Dukes to get his fourth save. Pfau and two other relievers preserved the victory for freshman right-hander Brian Frazier (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus). Frazier got off the hook after the Dukes loaded the bases with one out in both the first and second innings and worked until the Colonials took the lead in the sixth. He allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits, walked three and struck out six to improve to 6-0.
The Dukes broke out on top with three runs in the third as Schill and Santobianco hit back-to-back doubles for the game's first run. Freshman left fielder Joe Lake (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) reached on a bunt single before junior first baseman Matt Bristow (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) doubled in Schill. Lake raced home on a sacrifice bunt by junior center fielder Skyler Doom (Yorktown, Va./York).
