HARRISONBURG, Va. (April 8, 2005) – James Madison University's athletes of the year, scholar-athletes of the year, and Hall of Fame inductees were recognized Friday (April 8) at the Greater Madison, Inc., Athletic Banquet at JMU's College Center.
Honored were track and field and cross country performer Kelly Baker (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) and golfer Meg Davies (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) as female scholar-athletes of the year, football player Trey Townsend (Victoria, Va./Central-Lunenburg) as male scholar-athlete of the year, cross country and track field performer Shannon Saunders (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) as female athlete of the year, and football player Matt Magerko (Farnham, Va./Northumberland) as male athlete of the year.
Also at Friday's banquet two former JMU student-athletes and a nationally recognized coach were inducted into the university's Athletic Hall of Fame. The inductees included basketball player Steve Hood (Class of 1991), track and field performer Tiomb? Hurd (Class of 1995) and basketball coach Charles "Lefty" Driesell.
JMU student-athletes who have had a 3.0 grade-point average or better during either of JMU's two most-recent semesters also were recognized during Friday's activities.
Hood twice was named player of the year in the Colonial Athletic Association (1989-90, 1990-91), and he was the conference's top scorer during each of those seasons. JMU won the league's regular-season crown during each of his two seasons as a JMU player, and he remains the Dukes' career three-point shooting percentage leader (.464). He averaged 22.0 points for JMU's 20-11 team in 1989-90 and 20.7 points for its 19-10 team in 1990-91. JMU competed in the National Invitation Tournament during each of Hood's two playing seasons with the Dukes.
Hurd is the JMU women's track and field program's most-decorated athlete, and she competed in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games as a triple jumper after setting an American record of 47-feet, five inches in the U.S. Olympic Trials. While competing at JMU she won All-America honors five times and was fourth overall and first among Americans at the 1995 outdoor collegiate championships and fifth overall and second among Americans indoors that year.
Driesell compiled a 159-111 (.589) record at JMU from 1988-97, took the Dukes' men's basketball team to post-season play five times, and had four 20-win seasons. His team won the 1994 CAA Tournament, and his teams for five consecutive seasons (1989-94) won the CAA's regular-season crown or tied for the title. Driesell was the CAA coach of the year in 1989-90 and 1991-92 and the Virginia college coach of the year in 1993-94. Under his direction the Dukes had two CAA players of the year, two league rookies of the year, three CAA scoring leaders, and 11 first-team All-CAA honorees.
