TOWSON, Md., Sept. 23, 2005 – Junior Sebastian Haensel (Leipzig, Germany) scored the only goal of the game midway through the first overtime period as Towson (7-1-0, 1-0-0) won its seventh game in a row, a 1-0 overtime victory over James Madison (4-3-1, 0-1-0) in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at the Tigers' Towson Center Field on Friday afternoon.
Haensel's goal ended a scoreless battle between two of the top defensive teams in NCAA Division I. Towson entered the game as the eighth-ranked defensive team in the country, allowing 0.43 goals per game while the Dukes were ranked 16th, allowing 0.55 goals per game.
Haensel scored the game-winning goal at 95:42 on a fast break off a pass from sophomore Pat Healey (Calvert Hall H.S./Bel Air, Md.). On the winning goal, Haensel dribbled up the right side and fed the ball to Healey, who gave it right back to him. Then, Haensel scored off a 10-yard shot against junior goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (Myers Park H.S./Charlotte, N.C.) to end the game.
In addition to winning their seventh straight game, the Tigers posted their fifth consecutive shutout. The Tigers have not allowed a goal in their last 471:38, dating back to a 2-1 win over Richmond on September 9. Their 471 consecutive scoreless minutes shattered the school record of 352 minutes set in 2002.
Senior goalkeeper Zak Thompson (Springbrook H.S./Silver Spring, Md.) made nine saves for the Tigers, earning his fifth shutout of the year. He ranks among the NCAA leaders, allowing 0.39 goals per game.
Among Thompson's nine saves was a stop on a penalty kick by junior Kurt Morsink (San Jose, Costa Rica/IMG) in the first half. At 32:05, Morsink was awarded a penalty kick and Thompson made the save.
The Tigers also missed scoring chances in the first half. In the eighth minute, freshman Mosca Cisneros (Guadalajara, Mexico) hit the far post on a wide-open breakaway. In the 38th minute, Healey hit a shot that curved around Trapp. But, the shot hit the post and bounced away, keeping the scoreless tie.
Haensel's fifth goal of the season ended a very even match in which his team had 17 shots on goal. Trapp made seven saves for the Dukes.
