RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Renata Salvatori (Londrina, Brazil/Arizona Western CC) registered 14 kills on a .333 percentage when Virginia Commonwealth University defeated James Madison University in three games, 30-27, 30-26, 30-26, Friday night at Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
The victory was VCU's first over its Colonial Athletic Association rival since 1995, ending the Dukes' 17-match stranglehold in the series.
The Rams even their overall mark at 8-8 with the win, their second straight, and improve to 2-4 in the CAA. James Madison drops to 10-4 and 4-2 in the league.
Salvatori added two block assists and six digs to her totals, while junior Melissa Peterson (Ganado, Ariz./Arizona Western CC) slammed 10 kills and seven block assists for the Rams, who had 10 total blocks on the night.
Junior Ashley Copenhaver(Hedgesville, W. Va./Hedgesville) and sophomore Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) led the Dukes with 11 kills apiece.
VCU freshman Ana Luiza De Borja (Florianopolis, Brazil/Colegio Geracao) helped stake the Rams to a 1-0 lead with five kills and no errors in Game One. De Borja finished with eight kills and no errors in 19 attempts. VCU hit .314 in the first stanza and finished the match with a .265 percentage.
Freshman Catherine Juson (Long Beach Calif./Bush) directed the Black and Gold offense to the tune of 38 assists, including 14 in each of the first two games.
